“For I was…a stranger and you made me welcome…I tell you solemnly, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25: 35-40)
Justice for Immigrants:
U.S. CATHOLIC BISHOPS SEEK IMMIGRATION SYSTEM REFORM; ASK FOR HELP OF CATHOLICS
Polls conducted by different organizations with different goals on the topic of U.S. immigration reform seem to indicate agreement on one thing: a majority of Americans believe that the U.S. immigration system as it now exists doesn’t work.
One new way the Catholic Church in the U.S. is contributing to this crucial public conversation about reform is through their new Justice for Immigrants effort, which seeks:
- To educate Catholics about the benefits of immigration and the benefits of immigrants to our nation;
- To strengthen public opinion about the positive contributions of immigrants, and;
- To advocate for just immigration laws which promote legal status and legal pathways for migrant workers and their families to migrate in a safe, humane, and orderly manner; and
- To organize Catholic legal service networks to assist immigrants to access the benefits of reforms.
