CHICAGO (March 7, 2005) – Ms. Roweno Gono, a member of the staff of Catholic Relief Services and an African, will be the keynote speaker at an Africa Summit sponsored by the Peace and Justice Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at St. Ambrose Church, 1012 E. 47 th St., Chicago.
Other speakers, including a local businessman, a college chaplain and a missionary priest, will address the issues of financing small businesses, health, education and advocacy in Africa.
Fr. Stephen Newton, CSC, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross and chaplain at the John Paul II Newman Center at the University of Illinois Chicago, will discuss health issues in Africa, where AIDS exists in epidemic proportions.
Mr. Gerald Keenan, a businessman with Palmer Bellevue, LLC and a parishioner at Sacred Heart Parish in Winnetka, will make a presentation on micro financing in Africa. Mr. Keenan has supported the development of small businesses in countries like Haiti through his parish.
Xaverian missionary priest, Fr. Rocco Pupolo, SX, will discuss the practice of using children as soldiers in the many conflicts that have plagued the continent. Fr. Pupolo has served as a missionary in Sierra Leone.
