CHICAGO (May 11, 2006) – Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, will bless the new Midwest Regional Office of Catholic Relief Services, the official international relief and development agency of the U.S. Catholic community, at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 12, at 770 N. Halsted St., Chicago.
The new office is part of a plan by CRS, headquartered in Baltimore, to better respond at a regional level. Founded in 1943 by the Catholic bishops of the United States, the CRS mission is to assist the poor and disadvantaged, alleviate human suffering and promote development of all people nationally and internationally.
Two other regional offices, one in Philadelphia and one in San Antonio, were also opened recently. A third region has also been designated in the western United States but, because it covers a large area, staff will not operate from a centralized office. Mid-Atlantic and Southern offices are also being planned.
The Midwest Regional Office will have a staff of five; a regional director, three program/advocacy officials and an office coordinator.
