Father Robert
S. Brodfuehrer, pastor emeritus of St. Francis Borgia Parish on
Chicago's Northwest Side, passed away on Tuesday, July 30. He was
81 years old and had been retired since 1991. Fr. Brodfuehrer died
of congestive heart failure at Resurrection Hospital, where he had
been taken from his residence at St. Benedict Parish. For most of
his retirement years Fr. Brodfuehrer was in residence at St. Cornelius
Parish in Chicago.
Ordained in
1945, Fr. Brodfuehrer was a graduate of Quigley North Preparatory
Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary.
Fr. Brodfueher was assigned as associate pastor of St. Mary Parish
in Riverdale in 1945, and remained there for 12 years. He was associate
pastor at St. Pascal from 1957 to 1963, and served in the same capacity
at St. Francis de Sales Parish for six years, from 1963 to 1969.
In that year,
he became associate pastor at St. Margaret of Scotland and the following
year was named pastor, a position he held for six years before being
made pastor of St. Francis Borgia Parish. Fr. Brodfuehrer was pastor
of St. Francis Borgia for 14 years before his retirement in 1991,
at which time he was named pastor emeritus.
Fr. Brodfuhrer
taught religion at St. Benedict and St. Francis de Sales high schools
for 12 yeas between 1958 and 1970. He was known for encouraging
young men to study for the priesthood and is credited with supporting
several vocations in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Bishop Timothy
Lyne will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. Brodfuhrer
at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, at St. Francis Borgia Church,
8033 W. Addison St., Chicago. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery
in River Grove.
